April Greetings!

April can be a difficult time in the valley. As we know many are probably sick and tired of winter, and we could still get more snow. You are also probably tired of us talking about what a great ski season it has been and going on and on and on about it. Sorry, but we have to keep talking about it!!! This season was epic (could still hit 500 inches at Monarch) and I would like everyone to take a moment of silence in honor of the 07/08 ski season....................................thanks! :) While many are holding on to the end of winter, many are anxious for the warmer seasons to come. so while the ski season comes to a close and everyone starts thinking about more warm weather activities we ask that you do not forget to stop by "The Jug" for all of your springtime activity needs. After all, a different season brings different recreational opportunities and libation cravings Her at "The Jug" we are proud to take care of the latter! Stop on by this April and take advantage of all the "super springs savings" we ave come up with. As always, thank you for your continued patronage and we look forward to seeing each and every one of you this month at "The Jug."

Happy Springtime!

Kris Pinot Nero 2006 (100% Pinot Noir) ~ Was $16.99...NOW $14.99!
From the famed Franz Haas estate in Alto Adige, here is the first release of this incredible Pinot Noir. Kris Pinot Nero displays a young, fragrant and fruity style that is in keeping with the zone's production tradition. At the same time, however, it has a good structure and body so that it develops greater complexity. The coor is a light ruby red that resembles the tints of wild berries. The bouquet offers scents of red and black currants. On the palate the wine is dry with a good, elegantly balanced structure with notes of berries and currant. This one's a must try!

Tilia Malbec Mendoza 2006 ~ Was $8.99...NOW $7.99
Named after the Linden, or Tilia, tree commonly found in Argentina, this wine possesses true varietal character and has come to the market at a value price. The Tilia tree can be found throughout the winer country of Argentina. The nose offers dense black fruit aromas with light violet notes and a touch of sweet toast. The mouthfeel is full and rich, with ripe, concentrated black currant and cassis fruit flavors with a touch of chocolate and sweet spice from light oak aging. what a bargain!

Zinful Thoughts Napa 2005 ~ Was $11.99...NOW $10.99
Don't be fooled by the name or label, this Zinfandel is well worth twice the price. This Zinfandel explodes with ripe plums on the nose with flavors of raspberries, dried cranberries, boysenberry, blackberry and classic pepper. Pair this wine with BBQ, lamb, beef, pizza, pork, cheese...or just a glass!

WHITES:

Pepiere Muscadte Sevre et Maine, Loire 2006 ~ Was $12.99...NOW $10.99
Marc Oliver hand harvests (a rarity in the region) uses natural yeasts, waits for the wine to finish and bottles with a very light filtration. The vineyards are in old vines (40 years and older) with a particularly good exposition on a plateau overlooking the river Sevre. All the vineyards are from original stock; Oliver is the only grower in the Muscadet who does not have a single clonal selection in the vineyards. This heroic vigneron does in Muscadet with old vines, granitic soils and low yields wheat others dream of in much more "serious" appellations. the 2006 Domaine de la Pepiere Classique Muscadet has now arrived. It is energetci, juicy and full of life, a cool crisp slice of the Muscadet soil tempered with snappy fruit. Don't delay.

Babich Sauvignon blanc Marlborough 2007 ~ Was $14.99...NOW $12.99
The aroma of lantana and wild herbs combines wiht tropical fruits and green apple. The palate is exuberant and intense fruit salad, nettles and fresh herbs burst into existence and continue through the length of the palate, joined at the end by lime/citrus and mineral notes. A powerful and lengthy Sauvignon. This wine works well with a white meat dish. Also great with oysters or a green salad!

Argiolas Costamolino Vermentino Di Sardegna 2006 ~ Was $14.99...NOW $12.99

Straw yellow in color with green highlights. Subtle, intense and delicate on the nose with clean varietal characteristic. Delicate and pleasantly refreshing on the palate. Recommended with antipasti, pasta and fish courses. This wine consistently receives high scores!

Connoisseurs Corner:

Siduri Pinot Noir Sonoma County 2006 ~ Was $29.99...NOW $26.99
By focusing solely on Pinot Noir from the most prestigious vineyard sites in California and Oregon, and by vinifying each barrel separately by lot, clone, yeast and copper, Siduri champions individuality of place and intensity of flavor in each wine they produce. WOW! This wine is a steal at 27 Bucks, our clear favorite of Siduri's appellation wines. Really nice floral nose, with a classic red-fruit flavor profile, tart red cherries and strawberries. Great balance, full and broad on the palate, finely textured and pleasing medium finish.

Greetings for January/February 2008

Dear Valued Customers,

Happy New Year! Sorry that we have been slacking on getting the first newsletter of 2008 out and about, but 200 plus inches of snow at Monarch has been calling us, not to mention the hectic holiday season :)

Anyhoo, we're back! And better late than never, right? What better way to kick off the new-year than with some awesome deals down at Arlie Dale's Jug Liquors? We are excited to bring in some new Jug Club Wine varietals that we have never had before as well as two new French wines of the 2005 vintage (2005 is considered one of the best years ever for wine in France.) Also due to customer requests we have increased the number of beers on sale. Whatever your taste buds are asking for, you will find it this month at "The Jug."

As always we would like to thank you for your continued patronage and look forward to serving you this month and this year.

All curves and sinful indulgence, Désirée is a bit of a bad girl, but in all the right ways. Like a long, seductive kiss that never seems to end, the essence of Désirée is playful, enticing and fun. Conceived as a deliciously decadent Californian interpretation of the great Port wines, Désirée Chocolate Dessert Wine is an exotic blend of Zinfandel, along with two of Portugal's classic grape varieties and an infusion of rich, opulent chocolate. An experience unto itself in the world of wine, Désirée is meant to be sipped and savored as a luscious liquid dessert (think heavenly chocolate mousse without the calories), or a companion alongside the most hedonistic after dinner treats- whatever they may be.

2006 Cono Sur, Pinot Noir

Was $11.99 ~~ NOW $9.99

This Chilean winery is taking their journey into Pinot Noir so seriously, that they have created an entire independent wing of their winery dedicated exclusively to this grape. Started in 1999, they have moved forward from their initial goal of producing the finest Pinot Noir in Chile, to making a French-style Pinot Noir to take on the world. Hand harvested, and individually checked, the whole clusters of grapes are then actually crushed manually… with feet! Gravity (not pumps) then takes the wine to the barrel room, where it spends 14 months in French oak. The wine has a lively, purple-red color, aromas of cherry, raspberry, plum, strawberry & just a little smoke. Soft, velvety textured flavors of sweet fruit lead to a long, balanced & structured finish with fine tannins.

2005 Chateau de Brondeau,

Bordeaux

Was $21.99 ~~ NOW $17.99

Robert Parker recommends not only this vintage fr
om Bordeaux, but also some of the "lower pedigree", Merlot-based wines because of the depth & quality of the vintage, and the fact that they will be drinkable sooner. 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon tell you that this wine will have much more depth & complexity than most Merlots though… This wine is ready to drink now, but will continue to improve for the next 3 years or so. You will be rewarded if you decant it before serving as well… It is an intense, bright & opaque, ruby red in color. The aromas are subtle, and will reveal themselves more fully with a little swirling of your glass, but wow… There's a lot going on in here! Cherry, plum, black currant, blackberry, raspberry… Vanilla? Black pepper? Wait… roses, violets & licorice too! These aromas carry through to smooth, velvety, concentrated flavors with a light acidity, followed by a long elegant finish.

2005 Pannaroz, Jumilla

Was $10.50 ~~ NOW $8.99

Wow! A 90 point rated wine from Robert Parker for under $10?!? A blend of Mouvedre, Grenache & Syrah, this wine is an inky, purple-red color with big, sweet aromas of blackberries, cherries, chocolate, and a little earth. Fruity & medium-bodied with a long finish, this wine is a steal!

2006 Reds, by Laurel Glen

Was $9.99 ~~ NOW $8.99

This red blend is always a quality wine, and a great value. For 2006, it worked out that the wine was comprised of 1/3 Zinfandel, 1/3 Petite Sirah, and 1/3 Carignane. A very dark reddish-purple, the wine has fresh, fruity aromas of plums, berries & cherries, with just a touch of warm spice. Full, ripe flavors of blackberry from the Zin are balanced with a white pepper zing from the Carignane. The Petite Sirah keeps the jammy character of the Zin under control, adds a subtle black pepper, contributes heavily to the darkness of color, and really kind of pulls the whole blend together. This wine cries out for grilled meat, so pick up a few bottles for that first BBQ!

WHITE

2005 Le Sud, Blanc

Was $7.99 ~~ NOW $5.99

An interesting blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Roussanne, & 5% Clairette. Estate bottled & grown, the wine is produced by Chateau Condamine, which has been around for, oh, about 220 years… The wine is a clear, yellow-gold color, with fine orchard fruit aromas of peach, pear & apple. Exotic & elegant flavors of mango & lychee, along with a fresh pear make this wine a natural to be served with lighter fare (fish, fruit, salad…), or by itself as an aperitif… A fantastic value.

RED

N-Zero, Negro Amaro

Hailing from Apulia in the "heel" section of the "boot" that is southern Italy, this hearty red wine is made by Cantine Menhir, whose winemaking and bottle ageing facilities are located in a grand 18th century palace that is actually a few mere kilometers from the Greek coast. Negro Amaro is a very old, indigenous Italian grape that many think is somehow related to America's Zinfandel grape, although wines made from Negro Amaro tend to be a bit more dry. This is a bright concentrated wine that tastes of wild blackberries & ripe plums with a long, velvety finish. Another under-appreciated grape forced upon you by the staff at The Jug!

WHITE

2006, Adegas Morgadio, Albarino

This is a consistently excellent, balanced and refreshing wine. Coming to us from Spain, this Albarino has a beautiful, bright, straw-yellow color, with lofty citrus aromas along with quince & a subtle mineral. This wine surprises us a bit with an acidic zing & even a hint of effervescence. Flavors of lemon, pear & quince lead you to a ripe tangerine. The wine is keenly focused, with a persistent taste of lime zest on the finish. A very well made wine that is equally marvelous on it's own, or when served with a wide variety of foods.

Shale Ridge Syrah
Was $8.99 ~ Now $7.99
This wine's brilliant ruby color is just a prelude to its bright aromas of red cherry and dark plum. a hint of vanilla from French oak aging is evident in the nose while a soft tannin structure, coupled with a full-bodied mouth feel, makes this wine immediately enjoyable.

Novy Family Syrah
Was $20.99 ~ Now $17.99
This wine shows concentrated blackberry and loganberry flavors along with hints of tar, sage, and other herbal notes. The finish shows some minerality and, due to the wine's acidity, clamps down a touch. Opening the wine and letting it breathe for several hours certainly leads to a more open, rich wine but giving it several years in a cool cellar should yield even greater rewards.

Prosperity Red-Cabernet Sauvignon
Was $9.99 ~ Now $7.99
Prosperity Red hails from the celebrated winegrowing valleys of California. This wine boasts classic Cabernet flavors of black cherry and cassis with accents of oak and mint. A beautifully structured texture unfolds into a full, lingering finish.

October Jug Club Wines

RED
2005 Domaine de la Chanteleuserie "Bourgueil"
Retail $15.99 ~ Jug Club$13.59
How 'bout a little jaunt to France for this month's red? After all, they've been doing this for QUITE some time now...Since 1822 at this small facility in fact. This wine is "stereotypically" French in that it is not fruit driven...Aromas of lead pencil, fresh herbs, subtle spicy blackberry & black currant, rocky earthen notes, unsweetened cocoa, espresso & maybe a "leafy" quality are full of complexity. Earthy flavors of subtle dark fruit, olives, coffee & chocolate are present, but what you notice first is the HUGE tannins and acidity. This is why we recommend that DECANT this wine, or at least pour a glass and forget about it for awhile, unless you like IMMENSE red wines, and then, well, knock yourself out...A CLASSIC food wine. This vineyard is 3 hectares...small, and the name & label do mean something...Chanteleusery means "place where the larks sing" in French.
WHITE
2006 "The White Knight" Viognier
Retail $11.99 ~ Jug Club $10.19
FINALLY! We have been looking for a good California Viognier to show you ever since we started this Jug Club thingy...but all the good examples we've tried so far have been $20-$30. Our patience has been rewarded. From the Sebastiani Family comes: The White Knight. Classic Viognier aromas & flavors of honeyed peaches, mineral, honeysuckle, acidity, it's all here! Get deeply into this wine & smell what we're steppin' in...orange blossom & lemon meringue aromas, flavors of mango, breadfruit, vanilla, lemon curd & that GORGEOUS white peach all come together with the perfect amount of acidity on the finish. This wine is also very versatile. It works well alone, with light appetizers, with entrees like Jerk chicken or fish tacos and we've heard that stirring a bit into fresh fruit sorbet is to DIE for. Enjoy it, we are...

RED WINES:
2006 Goats do Roam
Regularly $11.50 ~ Sale $9.99
Funny name, serious wine. A traditional Rhone-style blend with a twist...Our South African friends have added a bit of their own native grape, Pinotage, to the typical Syrah/Grenache/Mouvedre/Cinsault/Carignane blend. Not the same grapes every year, but the quality is remarkably consistent. Purple, plush & juicy, this wine serves up red plum & cherry fruit with maybe just a hint of tobacco on the finish. Just a little spice, and low tannin & acidity make this wine an easy sipper. Multiple "Best value" awards.
2004 Hope Estate "The Ripper" Shiraz
Regularly $14.49 ~ Sale $12.99
Lots going on in this BIG Shiraz from down-under...Blueberry, plum, chocolate with some nutmeg & white pepper spice flavors that just go on and on...This is what people are talking about when they say a wine has a long finish! Pair this with as rich a meal as you like...Definitely red-meat friendly. You could cellar this bad boy fro another 7 years or so should you desire, or decant it to smooth it out now. Rated 89 points by BOTH Wine Spectator & Wine Enthusiast. Great value!
2005 Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon
Regularly $17.99 ~ Sale $15.99
Actually, it's MOSTLY Cabernet Sauvignon...83% to be exact, with 11% Syrah & 6% Merlot blended in. Black cherry, chocolate, caramel aromas draw you into complex flavors of currant, blackberry, more cherry, a bit of mocha & a subtle peppery spice. Darkly colored with a rich finish, this is a classic California Cabernet.
WHITE WINE:
Dog House "Charlie's Chard" Chardonnay
Regularly $10.99 ~ Sale $9.99
A very consistent wine from year to year, this Chardonnay has won more awards than you could carry, and can always be found on "Best Buy/Great Value" lists including, but not limited to, the Wine Spectator & Wine Enthusiast. A floral, fruit driven wine with beautiful citrus aromas, the mouth feel has that creamy-buttery-Chardonnay-thing present, but the flavor is more vanilla with an intriguing caramel apple. A fresh, clean acidic finish always helps to bring it all into balance as well.
CONNOISSEUR CORNER:
2004 Merryvale "Starmont" Cabernet Sauvignon
Regularly $28.99 ~ Sale $25.99
Another "deceiver," this is also a blend...86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot (to help tame the tannins), and 1% each of Cabernet Franc (aromatic complexity) & Petite Verdot (fruity depth) making it a Bordeaux-style blend. This is serious stuff. It WILL improve with age (probably peaking between 2009 & 2011), but it's hard to wait when it tastes this good now! Extended skin contact ("maceration") & extensive use of native yeast make this powerful wine, and the fruit comes from some VERY notable vineyards; Beckstoffer, Georges III, ToKalon & Merryvale's own estate, all in the Napa Valley. Round, harmonious, complex & supple aromas & flavors of blackberry & cassis will confirm your choice to spend a little more...

Greetings...

Dear Valued Customers,

September marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall. It also marks the beginning of the third year of the Jugalicious monthly newsletter. We at the jug can hardly believe that summer is almost over and that it has been two years since we first developed the Jugalicious newsletter. With each passing month and limited floor/shelf space, it gets more and more difficult to keep new wines coming in while keeping the favorite wines from the past. With that said, keep your eyes open for some of your favortie "Jugalicious" deals to repeat as we move into the future. For instance, Burgans Albarino, a very popular wine here at the Jug, is making a comback this month for all of its fans! so without further ado, we here at the Jug encourage ech and every one of you to enjoy September, after all, it is one of the most beautiful times of the year here in the Arkansas Valley. We also THANK YOU fro your continued patronage and look forward to seeing you this month at "The Jug."

Sincerely,
The staff at Arlie Dale's Jug Liquors

2004 I Giusti e Zanaz
Belcore
Was $26.99 ~ NOW $22.99

THIS is a wine NOT for the the faint of heart! Made up of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot, it is grown in the Poggio Alto vineyard (less than 20 acres) outside of Pisa, Italy. It was fermented in glassed lined cement tanks (huh?) and aged in oak for 8 months. This wine is the product of long time friends and sailing partners Paolo Giusti and Fabio Zanza. Located 12 miles from the sea in Tuscany, their estate encompasses only 34 acres of land, and the vineyards have been planted to yield less than 2lbs. per vine of fruit (less fruit=more intensity). In addition to the belcore, they make a Bordeaux-style blend called "Dulcamara"...We tell you that, to tell you this: The names of these wines are taken from L'Elisir D'Amore; an operetta by Donizetti. Simple story really...Boy loves girl. Girl plays hard to get. Belcore, a swaggering soldier, comes to town. Wants to marry girl. She accepts to make boy jealous. Dulcamara, an alchemist, provides boy with love potion, which is actually a bottle of Bordeaux (hence the winery's Bordeaux blend called...Dulcamara). The end? Well, everyone stops being stubborn and boy wins his love's hear of course! Great story...Great wine! "Recommended" Decanter

2006 Burgans Albarino
Was $11.99 ~ NOW $10.99

Virtually unknown proior to 1980, the Albarino grape is quickly gaining widespread popularity due to it's fresh, crisp flavors. In the Rias Baixas region of Spain, this winery is situated atop Mount Burgans in the Salnes Valley. Unusual for the area, they use only their own, estate-grown grapes rather than buying from local growers. The winmaker, Luciano Amoedo, is known as the "father " of the Riax Baixas, and his Albarino is probably the best value of it's kind. Medium gold in color, it is fresh with aromas of honey, orange, peach and minerals. Flavors of more peach, apple and crystal-like mineral lead to a vibrant, acidic finish. Fresh and crisp, it is a natural partner to the seafood diet famous in this area of Spain. This wine was rated 89-90 points by The Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker.

2005 Flora Springs
Sangiovese Rosato
Was $7.99 ~ NOW $6.49

With only 500 cases of this wine made, it's pretty exclusive. We are lucky and happy to have it. Let's all hope for some warm September days, 'cuz the hotter it gets, the better this wine tastes!

2006 Alma Rosa Pinot Blanc
Retail $16.99 ~ Jug Clubbers $1529

Richard Sanford arrived in the Santa Rita hills 35 years ago. He planted the first Pinot Noir vines there in 1970, (the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard) and founded the Sanford Winery in 1981. A "difference in business philosophy" led to his leaving his namesake winery in 2005. He then founded Alma Rosa to make the highest quality, sutainably farmed, ORGANIC wines possible. We think that you will be pleased with the results. While he may have new energy and positive focus, his wines still posses the perfect balance that made them/him famous. We at "The Jug" promised to bring you new, great wines, and here is a perfect example...Pinot Blanc. How can a wine be both lean and rich? Taste it...starting all bright and sunny with melon, citrus and pear aromas, it moves to a firm, yet creamy mouth feel with flavors of everything that you smelled, along with peach, nectarine vanilla and wet stones. The fruit gets a bit deeper and adds a minerality midway through, leading to a perfect amount of acid on the finish.
This wine is simply stunning.

2006 Alamos "Seleccion" Malbec
Retail $16.99 ~ Jug Clubbers $14.44

Paul Hobbs (yes, THE Paul Hobbs of Simi & Opus One wine making fame) released his first Argentine wines in 1995. they are meant to emphasize "varietal character" (read: taste like they should...). Grown in the high altitudes of Catena, the cool evening temperatures allow for a prolonged hang-time which preserves the fruit's aromas and flavors. The 2006 vintage is from the La Consulta vineyard. It has an inky-purple color, and an aroma loaded with ripe, dark fruits and flowers...maybe even some hints of leather, vanilla and spice. The flavors are juicy raspberry, currant and cherry with a bit of anise and black pepper spice. Full bodied with a long finish, the tannins are smooth and there is just the right amount of acidity. This wine DEMANDS a spicy steak!
